It has an area of 87 km2 (34 sq mi) when full, and was created at Namla Thikana (rathore-patvi)[2] in the 17th century, when Rana Jai Singh of Udaipur built a marble dam across the Gomati River. It is about 19 km (12 mi) from the district headquarters of Salumbar.
The temple was constructed in 874 CE (VS 931) during the reign of Rawal Khuyan, the ruler of Mewar. The temple received patronage from rich merchants since its situated on an important trade route from the coast to the state of Mewar. Haldighati is a historical mountain pass between Khamnore and Balicha village situated at Aravalli Range of Rajasthan in western India which connects Rajsamand and Udaipur districts. The name 'Haldighati' is believed to have originated from the turmeric-coloured yellow soil of the area.
